As we don't have huge budgets for paranormal investigation we only use simple tools.

As an alternative to an EMF Gauge we use a compass, which doesn't work aswell as EMF. It is not a sensitive to magnets and electricity like EMF can be.

I did however purchase a much more expensive Sony digital video camera.
30GB hard drive with a carl Zeiss lens, perfect night vision and all in High Def.
It cost around $1500 Aus dollars
About a year ago i used a $200 sony hi-8 camera with night vision. but it was such bad quality at night. I had to upgrade. Also included with my video camera is my still camera which takes color pictures at 5 mega pixels, which isn't to bad at all for built in stills.

The photographer in my crew carries a fuji digital SLR which takes stills at 8 Mega Pixels which is just what you need on a paranormal investigation, it takes brilliant night pics in full color.

Sometimes we will use a charged pendulum on investigations where we know there may be some communication.

We have also from time used dowsing rodes, which i think aren't really speculation for paranormal activity.

And lastly we do at times use a medium, which is probably your best tool outside your camera.

Eventually we hope to built up our list of equipment but for now have to settle with what we have.

Hi Killer Moon,

Word on the street is that a temperature reader at Bunnings is now
about $25.It so happens I have a keen interest in such things.
And as for xtra gear for survival and navigation, this Christmas my olds
presented me with a wind up Radio/Lamp/torch/alarm/backlit display.
Probably not a paranormal detecting tool, but highly useful for the middle of
nowhere, and as a multi purpose backup light source.

And here's the kicker.
It has a slot for mobile charging and can be charged by a AC/DC
pack, generic or ni-cad batts or the auxiliary windup

Should be useful-
